After the “Tour of the Salt Pans,” the historical re-enactment of the oldest car race in the world with its exclusive crews is ready for the second and final stage on the “Circuito delle Madonie.” The partial rankings already outline the first duels on the time trial. At 4 p.m. the embrace of Palermo in Piazza Verdi for the final parade.

The Targa Florio Classica is entering its prime and getting ready for the grand finale. If on Friday, the “Tour of the Salt Pans” in the westernmost part of Sicily between Alcamo, Campobello di Mazara, Mazara del Vallo, Trapani and the beautiful Marsala Salt Pans, with the evocative passage on the road to Erice, made the more than 200 crews of the Targa Florio Classica experience, of the Italian Great Events Championship, the Italian Championship of Historic Car Regularity and the Ferrari Tribute to Targa Florio, breathtaking landscapes and hospitality, tomorrow for the second day and final stage called “Circuito delle Madonie,” we enter the roads of myth. That’s right, for “Stage 2” the program says, departure again at 8. 30 of Saturday, Oct. 14 from the University of Palermo at the Museum of Engines and Mechanisms, then stages to the roads that were the scene of that “world championship of brands” that saw epic battles and triumphs of drivers of the caliber of Ninni Vaccarella, idol of Sicilian fans, who won in 1965 paired with Lorenzo Bandini, on the Ferrari 275 P, in 1971 with Toine Hezemans on the always celebrated Alfa Romeo 33/3 Sport Prototype and in 1975 with Arturo Merzario again on Alfa Romeo 33TT12 Spyder in his last race as a driver.

After the Start we said, the crews on their beautiful cars will move on to Buonfornello, Floriopoli, Cerda, Caltavuturo, Castellana, Petralia Sottana, Piano Battaglia, Collesano and Campofelice di Roccella. On the picturesque Belvedere of Termini Imerese they will also face the Power Stage Classic skills test that will be broadcast on ACI Sport Tv (Sky channel 228). The arrival is scheduled in the early afternoon with the traditional crowd bath in Piazza Verdi in Palermo when the city will return to embrace the Targa Florio starting at 4 p.m. for the arrival parade and where the rankings will be outlined, which, as per regulations, will be announced in the following hours. Finally, on Sunday 15, the awards ceremony is scheduled at the Cala Muletti estate in Terrasini starting at 12:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, the first day that saw a moment of celebration, with a massive presence of the public and fans in Campobello di Mazara, in the presence of a bath of crowds enriched by schoolchildren from the town where the regularity was born. Greeting the Aci President Angelo Sticchi Damiani, competing in the Lancia Aurelia, in addition to all participants was Mayor Giuseppe Castiglione, who presented each crew with typical products and an illustration created by the Pro Loco Association Costa di Cusa, together with local companies. Also present at the Campobello passage was Giovanni Pellegrino, president of Automobile Trapani as well as Extraordinary Commissioner of AC Palermo, which organizes the Targa Florio event.

Marsala, Trapani and Erice, were highly suggestive theaters of the track, which outlined the first duels, especially within the Great Events and Cireas Championships where there are many crews entered in the dual competition, which awards points for the Sicilian Regularity Championship. To do battle to the sound of precision on the passage on the tubes with technical and treacherous tests, as equally are the media tests “very well studied,” as the competitors themselves say. On Friday, therefore, substantial head-to-head for much of the race between Angelo Accardo with Filippo Becchina in a Fiat 508C that last year, saw the joy of victory slip away by a single hundredth against Mario Passanante, who won the race. Winning the Targa Florio Classica in 2021, on the other hand, were the home favorites and “precision pediatricians” Giovanni Moceri and Valeria Dicembre, now competing in the 1937 Lancia Aprilia, a much-loved car on which the Palermo doctor grew up sportingly thanks to the teachings of his mentor Giuliano Canè. Returning to the partial ranking of the first day, Moceri and Dicembre find themselves chasing the top positions, which see a substantial head-to-head between the two strong Campobello-based Francesco and Giuseppe Di Pietra (champions of the Great Events in 2022) still on Fiat 508C and the Memphite Angelo Accardo with Filippo Becchina on Fiat 508. Also in evidence was Taranto’s Fabio Loperfido with Classic Team president Corrado Corneliani on a 1938 Lancia Aprilia. Among the splendid cars of the Ferrari Tribute to Targa Florio, an attacking race for experienced regularist Giordano Mozzi with Valter Lanzoni on Ferrari 458 speciale.

The Targa Florio Classica 2023 is experienced in the sign and memory of the curator of the Targa Florio Museum of Termini Imerese Nuccio Salemi who recently passed away.
